Nghi Son Refinery is ready for the first commercial products

Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant (NSRP) is located in Nghi Son Economic Zone – one of eight key coastal economic zones of the country. This project is the key project in oil and gas industry, with the aim of economic – social development and energy security. With the investment of almost 9.3 billion USD, NSRP is one of the biggest foreign invested projects in Vietnam; the capacity to process in Phase I is 200,000 barrels of crude oil/day, equivalent to 10 billion tons of crude oil/year, double the capacity of Dung Quat Refinery. Kuwait shall provide the crude oil in 70 years.
When completed, the plant's products will meet 40% of domestic petroleum demand, providing basic conditions for the development of post-refining and service industries.

The investor of the project is Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical LLC (NSRP), was established under the joint venture contract signed on 7th April 2008 and the certificate of investment issued on 14th April 2008. NSRP Project is a joint-venture project sponsored by 4 corporations: Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), Kuwait Petroleum Europe B.V. (KPE) from Kuwait, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd and Mitsui Chemical, Inc. from Japan. EPC works started on July 22nd, 2013, carried out by a Consortium as EPC Contractor. The Consortium is comprised of JGC Corporation (Japan) as the leader and other members: Chiyoda (Japan), GS E&C (Korea), SK E&C (Korea), Technip France (France) and Technip Geoproduction (Malaysia). Type of fuel that accounts for biggest portion of products is premium diesel (2,204 kt/year), following by regular diesel (1,470 kt/year), RON 92, RON 95 (1,153 kt/year), LPG, jet fuel and numerous petrochemical products.

This project shall make Nghi Son Economic Zone becomes the leading economic of the province, creating a sharp increase in state budget revenue and dynamic and the motivation for the socio-economic development of Thanh Hoa province as well as the economic region Nam Thanh - Bac Nghe and northern Central Vietnam.

At 11:00 pm, on 20th August 2017, VLCC Millennium, weighs 320 thousand tons, departing from Kuwait with 270,000 tons of crude oil, arrived SPM area of NSRP site. At 2:00 pm on 22nd August, the crude oil was transferred directly from VLCC through 35km of pipelines under the sea to the tanks of the refinery. Since 28th February 2018, NSRP has been ready for commercial products International standards of safety and security will make the plant's commercial operations.

On 3rd of March 2018, Chairman of Thanh Hoa’s People Committee gave the license for the land area C, with the square of 111ha for NSRP to ensure the operation for commercial products and further investment of Phase II of the projects in the next time, increasing the total square is up to 960 ha.

On 13th May, NSRP shall welcome the first commercial products which bring the hope for the development of Vietnamese products and the growth of the province
