Nghi Son Economic zone is planned to be one of 8 coastal key economic zones of the country, in which Nghi Son seaport plays an important role in enhancing competitive advantage to attract investment in the area as well as in Thanh Hoa province. Based on the approved planning, investors have continuously improved the seaport system, making Nghi Son become the logistics center of the region.
Thanh Hoa has a planned deep-water seaport system consisting of 62 specialized, general and container ports. Currently, 9 general berths and containers, 6 specialized berths have been put into operation and are continuing to invest 10 container berths and general berths, with the flow of ships to ensure the ships with> 30,000DWT capacity to access.

In 2018, Nghi Son Port exported 23.5 million tons of bulk cargo and about 55,000 containers of enterprises carrying out import and export procedures through Hai Phong port. From the demand of import and export of enterprises and the competitive advantage of Nghi Son port, Thanh Hoa province, investors have urged investors to speed up the construction of the port according to the approved planning, at the same time, there is a separate resolution on issuing policies to support shipping companies to open international shipping routes via Nghi Son Port. Thanks to the flexible and open policy, in May, Nghi Son international general port opened a container shipping route.

Therefore, CMA CGM decided to become the first shipping company to bring container ships into Thanh Hoa to serve the development of Thanh Hoa province in particular and neighboring provinces in general
The opening of a container ship route through Nghi Son port not only reduces transportation costs for Thanh Hoa's import-export businesses but also attracts about 12,000 containers of enterprises in Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Ninh Binh through ports each year. According to the calculation of the Customs Branch of Nghi Son Port border gate, after the container line goes into operation stably, it is expected to annually increase import and export taxes for the province to reach about VND 1,500 billion to VND 2,000 billion. In addition, the savings of 45-50% of the cost of transporting goods of Thanh Hoa enterprises also make the domestic budget revenue increase; solve more jobs for local workers; reduction of road transport means; at the same time, creating favorable conditions to attract more businesses to invest in Nghi Son Economic Zone and surrounding areas.

With the presence of the world's third largest container shipping company, Nghi Son Port has its name on the world seaport map. And the development of port infrastructure, in general, container port, in particular, in Nghi Son is creating an effective connection on transport infrastructure, improving the competitiveness of the province in terms of logictics services in the North Central area.
